The Truth About Leather Sofas

WE USE Full Grain Italian Leather on our leather sofas and leather settees: made from the finest raw material, are clean natural hides which have not been sanded to remove imperfections. Only the hair has been removed. The grain remains in its natural state which will allow the best fibre strength, resulting in greater durability. The natural grain also has natural breathability, resulting in greater comfort. The natural Full-Grain surface will wear better than other leather. Rather than wearing out, it will develop a natural "Patina" and grow more beautiful over time. The finest leather sofa furniture and footwear are made from Full-Grain leather. Full grain leathers can mainly be bought as two finish types: aniline(leather) and semi-aniline.

WE USE Full Aniline: Leather that is coloured all the way through with a transparent dye. The effect is applied by immersing the leather in a dye bath. Because the finish is transparent and shows the natural markings of the leather, only the best quality hides can be used.

WE USE Full Semi-Aniline: Aniline leather to which a matching pigment layer is added to even out the colour and add protection.

WE DON’T USE Corrected Grain: also known as Top-Grain leather, is fuzzy on one side and smooth on the other. The smooth side is the side where the hair and natural grain used to be. The hides, which are made from inferior quality raw materials, have all of the natural grain sanded off and an artificial grain applied. Top grain leather generally must be heavily painted to cover up the sanding and stamping operation. Corrected grain leathers can mainly be bought as two finish types: semi-aniline and pigmented.

WE DON’T USE Buffed Leather: Leather from which the top surface has been removed by abrasion. Often known as suede or nubuc.

WE DON’T USE Embossed Leather: Leather that has been "stamped" with a design or artificial texture under very high pressure. Used, for example, to create imitation alligator hide.

WE DON’T USE Pigmented Leather: Leather that has been coated with a flat surface colour on top of or instead of the usual dye finish. Leather is usually pigmented to add durability and hide natural blemishes.

WE DON’T USE Split Leather: Leather made from the lower (inner or flesh side) layers of a hide that have been split away from the upper, or grain, layers. Split leather is more fragile than side leather or full-grain leather, and is typically used in the form of suede.
